A few weeks ago I had the honor of moderating a pair of post-screening talks at the return of @outfest. One was for Allison Berg’s heartfelt documentary about a group of beautiful, resilient theater lovers, led by @starling.mydarling (pictured as Frank-N-Furter), in small-town Wyoming, rehearsing for and becoming the shadow cast for The Rocky Horror Picture Show despite pushback from a few folks over its queer, sex-positive content. I also had the pleasure of sitting down with New Queer Cinema legend Gregg Araki to chat about his new kink-positive film, I Want Your Sex. That was a complete trip for this film-obsessed kid. As someone who’s covered LGBTQ+ film and TV in queer media for years and actively sought images of myself in movies for even longer, I know that LGBTQ+ visibility is cyclical. If one or two films were proof that things were changing, I’d have breathed a sigh of relief 11 years ago when I saw “Carol” five times in the theater. As GLAAD’s new Where We Are in Film report shows, queer visibility in film has been declining for three years. Last year, at a time when trans people were all over the media because of conservative backlash, there were zero transgender characters in a studio-backed film. That erasure of the lived experience of trans people is a problem. Hollywood can and must do better, and until it does, we will hold the industry accountable.
